Once again, this is probably a personal thing, but I was not a fan of Tansy. I'm not sure exactly what I didn't like about her anxiety, but it felt like she shrunk into herself whenever she was around Katherine (her stepmother) and never tried to defend herself. Other people probably relate to her, but I didn't. She has anxiety, so I should feel for her since I too have anxiety, right? Wrong. And also can I just say, Gemma felt like she was not the type of person to express much outward love in the 36% I read. The fake love they were trying to portray to me read as too much and too cheesy. I don't know what it was with the two of them, but the fake engagement (I didn't get to the marriage part) felt *way* too forced. So, before I get into the real reason I hate this book, let's discuss why I didn't like Tansy and Gemma, the main characters. If you love this book, I'm sorry but maybe don't read my review. I was giving Bellefleur another chance with The Fiancee Farce because hello bookstore owner, sapphic, fake dating, fake marriage that leads to love? Yes, please. She had come to Kenya from Denmark with her husband, and when they separated she stayed on to manage the farm by herself, visited frequently by her lover, the big-game hunter Denys Finch-Hatton, for whom she would make up stories "like Scheherazade." In Africa, "I learned how to tell tales," she recalled many years later. Out of Africa is Isak Dinesen's memoir of her years in Africa, from 1914 to 1931, on a four-thousand-acre coffee plantation in the hills near Nairobi. If you thought the stories about my grandfather and father were sexy and bigger than life, you had better brace yourself for this giant dragon of a tale. By turns sad and uplifting, the book is a sobering antidote to our celebrity-obsessed culture and speaks to the oft-ignored fallout from fame. Now Vivian's writing back, so to speak, in "I Walked The Line: My Life with Johnny," released this fall. Vivian became fodder only for, as she writes, people curious about her past with her famous ex-husband and those of the Nashville mind-set who wanted her "written out of Johnny's history altogether." Vivian was the one cast out of the spotlight, left behind to raise her and Johnny's four daughters in Ventura as he and June Carter became the king and queen of country music in almost storybook romance style. Drugs and June Carter, Vivian Cash writes in her new book, ruined her marriage to music icon Johnny Cash - and Carter, others told her, was the more relentless of the two threats. |u |z View this book online, via VLeBooks, both on- and off-campus (one-day download only) |a African American men |x Social conditions. |a Discrimination in criminal justice administration. |a African American prisoners |0 |z United States. |a Criminal justice, Administration of |z United States. |a Discrimination in criminal justice administration |z United States. |a Argues that the War on Drugs and policies that deny convicted felons equal access to employment, housing, education, and public benefits create a permanent under caste based largely on race. |a The rebirth of caste - The lockdown - The color of justice - The cruel hand - The new Jim Crow - The fire this time. |a Includes bibliographical references and index. |a "With a new foreward by Cornel West"-Cover. |a New York : |b New Press : |b Distributed by Perseus Distribution, |c 2012. |a The new Jim Crow : |b mass incarceration in the age of colorblindness / |c Michelle Alexander. |a KRL |b eng |e rda |c KRL |d OCLCO |d XOL |d OCLCF |d WYZ |d CRP |d IGA |d FEM |d ERL |d KSU |d WEA |d NZEPN |d WSB |d MNG |d MUU |d SFR |d CDN |d NTF |d OCL |d CHILD |d OCLCQ |
